It has long been customary to divide the Republican Party into three “camps”: big business or “Wall Street” Republicans, the religious right and neoconservatives or “national security” Republicans. The third group, it must be admitted, somewhat unsteadily combines neoconservatives proper (such as William Kristol) with old- fashioned defense hawks (such as Donald Rumsfeld), but perhaps this is the Republican “big tent” we keep hearing about. In any case, this neat three-part logic was roiled by two events in 2008: the “Great Recession” and the election of Barack Obama as president. The latter’s decision to respond to the crisis with a ...

Trump Is Right to Meet Putin America needs fewer enemies. What’s wrong with reducing tensions? By SEN. RAND PAUL July 16, 2018 President Donald Trump meets with Russian President Vladimir Putin today, days after meeting with our NATO allies in Europe. Both meetings are important, and both cause confusion among politicians and those who report on them back home. Foreign policy is difficult. It comes in many shades of gray, and those who treat it as a team sport do harm to our safety and to our politics. Politicizing international affairs is a dangerous game, but that hasn’t stopped far too many in Washington, who seem to have forgotten that a vital part of keeping America safe ...

Full transcript of Chris Wallace's interview in Helsinki with Russian president Vladimir Putin, as supplied by Fox News. CHRIS WALLACE: President Putin, thank you for speaking with us. I am going to get to some specifics about the summit in a moment, but let's begin with the big picture. President Trump said in his news conference that our relationship has never been worse, but that changed a few hours ago. How has the relationship, big-picture, between the U.S. and Russia changed today? RUSSIAN PRESIDENT VLADIMIR PUTIN: Primarily, I think we should be grateful to our staff and our aides who spent several last months working with one another and not just in the preparations of ...

Once Again, President Trump Is Magnificently Right—This Time About Russia By David P. Goldman PJ Media July 16, 2018 President Trump offended the entire political spectrum with a tweet this morning blaming the U.S. for poor relations with Russia. “Our relationship with Russia has NEVER been worse thanks to many years of U.S. foolishness and stupidity,” the president said, and he is entirely correct. By this I do not mean to say that Russia is a beneficent actor in world affairs or that President Putin is an admirable world leader. Nonetheless, the president displayed both perspicacity and political courage when he pointed the finger at the United States for mismanaging ...

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., blasted President Trump for his comments during a joint press conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin Monday afternoon, and called it "one of the most disgraceful performances by an American president" in his lifetime. McCain said in a statement that the summit with Putin was a "tragic mistake" that showed off Trump's "naivete" and "egotism." He also said Trump "proved" that he is unable to stand up to the Russian president. “Today’s press conference in Helsinki was one of the most disgraceful performances by an American president in memory," McCain said. "The damage inflicted by ...

Donald Trump was condemned as “treasonous” for siding with the Kremlin over his own government agencies on Monday after a stunning joint appearance with Vladimir Putin in which he seemingly accepted the Russian leader’s denial of election meddling. At a joint press conference after one-on-one talks lasting more than two hours in the Finnish capital, the US president offered no criticism of Putin or the cyber-attacks that the US intelligence community says he coordinated to help Trump’s 2016 election campaign. “They said they think it’s Russia; I have President Putin, he just said it’s not Russia,” he told reporters. “I will say this: I don’t ...

Everything you do and think is racist, you probably just don’t realize it because you’re so super privileged. You can’t just sit back and hide in your white supremacist neighborhoods anymore. There’s no more abstaining from taking a side on this one. The sins of your ancestors have caught up to you! (Or at least the sins of the ancestors of people who look like you, considering most white Americans are descended from post-Civil War immigrants.) One thing about 2018 — it marks the anniversary of a number of great albums, including the groundbreaking “Music From Big Pink” by the group known simply as The Band. But what a band it was! Although the album title may not resonate among the masses, it remains a critical favorite today. It also became one of the most influential albums in music history, influencing artists such as The Beatles — especially George Harrison — Eric Clapton, The Grateful Dead, The Beach Boys and countless others. When the album first appeared in the summer of 1968, it proved revolutionary in music circles — revolutionary because of its deceptive simplicity. Released in the midst ...

Washington, D.C. – Despite receiving little attention in the mass media, the November 2017 and April 2018 release of more than 35,000 and 18,000 documents by the Trump Administration, relating to the assassination of former President Kennedy—which had been withheld from the public for more than 50 years—sheds new light on the president’s murder and the two soldiers who attempted to stop it. While the mainstream media did cursorily cover the two releases, virtually none of the coverage was aimed at the most damning revelations, which included the fact that two U.S. soldiers in separate locations uncovered cryptographic messages indicating that President Kennedy was ...

Fox News host Dana Perino on Thursday night called for congressional hearings to be taken off-camera following a wild hearing with FBI agent Peter Strzok earlier in the day. Perino slammed Democrats for an "outrageous" suggestion Strzok deserved a Purple Heart and scolded Republicans for "overboard" questions that "felt like a public lynching" during Strzok's testimony to the House Judiciary and House Oversight and Government Reform committees. The comments from the former George W. Bush press secretary came after Strzok's testimony dominated headlines and broadcast news on Thursday. Contrary to the mainstream media’s narrative, Robert Mueller’s latest indictment does not implicate President Trump, but exonerate him. On Friday, Special Counsel Robert Mueller returned a multi-count indictment charging 13 Russians and three companies with crimes related to hacking into the Democratic National Committee’s computers and seeking to use the information to influence the 2016 U.S. presidential election. When the news broke, pundits quickly used Mueller’s latest charges to chastise Trump for claiming the special counsel investigation is a “witch hunt.” The New York Times claimed “[t]he 37-page indictment — handed up by a federal grand ...

The announced retirement of Associate Justice Anthony Kennedy from the U.S. Supreme Court (effective July 31, 2018) has conservatives salivating over the prospects of Donald Trump’s nominating a constitutional conservative to the Supreme Court. Although Kennedy was nominated to the High Court by Ronald Reagan, he has at times disappointed conservatives with some of his votes, especially when it came to abortion, gay rights, and same-sex marriage (Kennedy authored the majority ruling in the Obergefell v. Hodges [2015] case, which legalized same-sex marriage nationwide). This will be the second Supreme Court justice that Trump has had a chance to appoint. After the death of Associate ...

Tires are supposed to leave tracks – not track us.Someone should tell the tire companies. Who aren’t telling us about the tracking devices they’re embedding in the tires they’re selling to us – and which can be used to keep track of our comings and goings without our even knowing about it, much less having consented to it.The devices are called Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags – chips, really. They are extremely small buggers – about the size of a grain of rice or even smaller than that – and have been in general use since at least the early 2000s for what is blandly styled Automatic Identification and Data Capture. Which means that ...

BATH TWP. – To artist Robert Park, his 1,000-foot-long outdoor installation called The Blue Loop is a creative outlet on his private property. To Bath Township officials, it’s just thousands of pieces of junk.Among the numerous objects are plastic coffee cans, pieces of children’s outdoor toys, watering cans, signs, bungee cords, cups, a rubber glove and a plastic duck — all in shades of blue — comprising the installation along a wooded pathway. Some of the objects are secured to trees or wires strung between trees. Some just sit on the ground. The Blue Loop is delightful and quirky. They perform aesthetically challenging stripteases on CSPAN, conduct unfortunate personal experiments with colloidal silver. I GET IT. The fundamental contradiction of libertarianism

I just read an extremely thoughtful essay by Chris Bertram, Corey Robin and Alex Gourevitch over at crookedtimber.org. It is a must for anyone seriously interested in discussing libertarianism and its logic. While Bertram and colleagues largely take on a new group that — apparently without trace of irony — calls itself “Bleeding Heart Libertarians,” many of the points they make can be applied to a broader analysis of libertarianism. As is well known, the core idea of libertarian philosophy is the preservation of the maximum amount of freedom possible. Though the concept seems, in practice, to be limited to the freedom of employers, we will give the libertarian the ...

Internet Trolls Really Are Psychos Roger Dooley i Oct 6, 2014, 06:02am 30,020 views If you've ever managed an online community, a blog, or a brand's Facebook page, you have encountered the dreaded "troll." These community members can be provocative and rude, and are known for creating posts for the sole purpose of agitating their fellow members. Trolls add inflammatory comments not because they hope to inform or convince others, but because they know they'll spark an avalanche of negativity. Left unchecked, trolls can destroy communities. Helpful members tire of the conflict and eventually leave. Trolls present a challenge to community managers not just because ...
