Bad news for green energy lovers: US oil & gas are booming

Another day, another spate of headlines about the growing mess at Tesla. Last week, the electric carmaker announced that its head of engineering, Doug Field, was taking a leave of absence to “spend time with his family.” That news came just a few days after the company announced dreadful first-quarter financial results. As usual, the company posted a huge loss (nearly $785 million) and the company’s CEO, Elon Musk, promised that Tesla will soon — really soon, and he means it this time — begin churning out Model 3 cars by the thousands. But the media’s infatuation with Tesla is overshadowing a story that’s far more important than the number of electric ...

When Elon Musk offered to build what would be the largest grid storage battery installation in the world in South Australia last year, he set off a chain of events that may have implications for the entire world. In a show of typical Muskian over-the-top bravado, Elon promised to build the entire facility in 100 days or it would be free. It was completed nearly 40 days early.Since then, the project has performed precisely as advertised, bringing stability to the grid in South Australia and making money for Neoen, the system operator, which recently pocketed $800,000 in 48 hours by absorbing excess electricity from the grid and selling it back to the grid operator later when demand ...

Media will focus overwhelming attention today on the G-20 economic summit in Germany for the initial encounter between President Trump and Russia’s Vladimir Putin. We previously explored here what’s at stake in that encounter. But from a lasting economic standpoint, folks, what happened Thursday in Poland and tomorrow in Britain could be much more important. In Warsaw, as Ed Morrissey points out, Trump offered leaders from Poland and numerous other European countries long-term LNG deals to diversify their supplies and avoid creating undesirable political leverage with a certain large country to the East that has not hesitated to cut off natural gas supplies for political reasons. ...

Remember when Obama and others said we “couldn’t drill our way out” of an oil crisis? They were wrong. Americans will be hitting the road in record numbers this Fourth of July. This is the prediction of AAA, anyway, and it seems like a fairly safe one. And the good news, as Steven Mufson writes at the Washington Post, is gasoline prices are hitting lows at the start of the summer driving season, a time when increased demand typically bumps up the cost of gas. This year, however, for the week that ended June 19, the nationwide average price of regular gasoline was $2.32 a gallon, about the same as June 2000 when adjusted for inflation. So what happened? Well, above all ...

Solar Panels Generate 300 Times More Toxic Waste Than Nuclear Reactors
Post Date: 2017-07-02 15:51:20 by Tooconservative

Solar panels create 300 times more toxic waste per unit of electricity generated than nuclear power plants, according to a Thursday report from the pro-nuclear group Environmental Progress (EP). The report found that solar panels use heavy metals, including lead, chromium and cadmium, which can harm the environment. The hazards of nuclear waste are well known and can be planned for, but very little has been done to mitigate solar waste issues. “The problem with waste from solar is that it isn’t handled as well as nuclear waste,” Dr. Jeff Terry, a professor of nuclear physics involved in energy research at the Illinois Institute of Technology, told The Daily Caller News ...

Tesla car battery production releases as much CO2 as 8 years of gasoline driving

Ooops, looks like those “saving the planet” Tesla snobs just got their eco-ride de-pimped. From NyTeknik: h/t to Don Shaw (translated) Huge hopes have been tied to electric cars as the solution to automotive CO2 climate problem. But it turns out the the electric car batteries are eco-villains in the production process of creating them. Several tons of carbon dioxide has been emitted, even before the batteries leave the factory. IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute was commissioned by the Swedish Transport Administration and the Swedish Energy Agency to investigate litium-ion batteries climate impact from a life cycle perspective. There are batteries designed for ...

Startup says it can make compressed-air energy-storage scheme dirt cheap

A Canadian company called Hydrostor has a new compressed-air energy-storage system that it says is half the cost of grid-scale batteries and on-par with adding a new natural gas plant to a grid. The system, called Hydrostor Terra, uses electricity when it’s plentiful to compress air and send it underneath the ground into a specially-constructed tank. While the system is compressing the air, it also takes the heat generated by the compressors and stores it in a thermal management system. Then, when electricity is in short supply, the Terra system sends that compressed air back up from underground and heats the surfacing air stream using the heat that was captured in the compressing ...

Medical marijuana is already a fact of life in 25 states and D.C., but why limit pain-relieving ganja to humans? Some pet owners think that their furry companions deserve to get in on the action, too, which led “The New York Times” to give the latest animal ownership trend a catchy name everyone can get behind: pets on pot. Pet owners are already experimenting with cannabis for their animals, despite the fact that veterinarians aren’t allowed to prescribe anything marijuana-related, The Times reports. It’s pretty easy for humans to get a medical card in states where it’s legal — Insomnia? Lack of appetite? Joint Pain? Sign right up! — which allows people ...

Fire raged unchecked through the Canadian city of Fort McMurray overnight as authorities raced to complete the evacuation of its population of 80,000, fearful that hot, dry winds forecast for Wednesday would further fan the flames. About 44,000 people were estimated to have fled the city by late on Tuesday on traffic-chocked roads, and the province of Alberta requested military help to bring the blaze under control and airlift others from fire- and smoke-filled streets. "I'm afraid that huge parts of my home town... may burn tonight and will continue to burn," Brian Jean, leader of Alberta's official opposition party, told CBC Radio, saying his own home was in the ...

Would you exercise for an hour every day if the workout powered your home for twenty-four hours? People often complain about the high costs of energy and the fact that they “never have time to workout.” This invention certainly solves both conundrums. And, most importantly, this free power invention has the potential to lift the 1.3 billion people who presently live without electricity out of poverty. As Manoj Bhargava, the founder of the Free Electric hybrid bike, shares in the video above, it is possible to generate electricity at home while simply doing a daily workout routine. When an individual pedals the bike, the action drives a flywheel, which turns a generator and ...

A Tower of Molten Salt Will Deliver Solar Power After SunsetFor the first time, solar thermal can compete with natural gas during nighttime peak demand Pillar Of Salt: More than a million square meters of mirrors focus on a tower of molten salt to generate power for the Las Vegas Strip. Solar power projects intended to turn solar heat into steam to generate electricity have struggled to compete amid tumbling prices for solar energy from solid-state photovoltaic (PV) panels. But the first commercial-scale implementation of an innovative solar thermal design could turn the tide. Engineered from the ground up to store some of its solar energy, the 110-megawatt plant is nearing completion in ...

A cleaner, greener way to store solar and wind energy [flow batteries]
Post Date: 2015-09-26 06:57:39 by Tooconservative

With the continuing rise of solar and wind power, the hunt is on for cheap batteries that are able to store large amounts of energy and deliver it when it’s dark and the wind is still. Last year researchers reported an advance on one potentially cheap, energy-packing battery. But it required toxic and caustic materials. Now, the same team has revised its chemistry, doing away with the noxious constituents—an advance that could make future such batteries far cheaper and simpler to build. The new design is what’s known as a “flow battery,” which is usually far larger than your sleek lithium-ion cell or lead-acid car battery. Unlike conventional batteries, flow ...

South African team may have solved solar puzzle even Google couldn't crack

It is a problem that has so far stumped even Google’s brainy engineers – how to generate cheap solar electricity using a small-scale array of mirrors to concentrate the sun’s energy. Now a team at a South African university – led by a former Intel strategic planner – believes they have cracked it. Once they have completed a prototype system in October they have big plans for rolling out the technology. The idea behind the design – so-called Concentrated Solar Power or CSP – is simple. A field of mirrors on the ground tracks the sun and concentrates its rays on to a central point which heats up. That heat is converted into electricity. There are a ...

'Beyond petroleum' - fracking's collapse heralds the arrival of peak oil

The 'death of peak oil' has been much exaggerated, writes Paul Mobbs. Take out high-cost 'unconventional' oil and production peaked ten years ago, and even North America's fracking and tar sands boom has failed to open up new resources both big enough to make good the shortfall, and cheap enough to reward investors. We really do need to be thinking 'beyond petroleum'.A few weeks ago tremors rocked the world of 'fracking' in the USA - though few heard them. The US Energy Information Agency (USEIA) had issued its latest Monthly Drilling Report and the news was not good. It wasn't simply the economic failure of fracking (covered in The Ecologist last ...
