Another Question, This Time Financial, for Herman Cain
Post Date: 2011-10-31 18:31:49 by Brian S
Early in his candidacy, Herman Cain may have accepted tens of thousands of dollars in goods and services for his campaign from a tax-exempt organization founded by his top aide, documents from the organization show, raising the prospect of serious violations of tax and election law by both Mr. Cains campaign and the organization. The documents suggest that the nonprofit organization, Prosperity USA, effectively subsidized some early costs of his presidential bid, paying for computer equipment, charter planes and air travel for Mr. Cain or the aide, Mark Block, who is his chief of staff. Such expenditures would violate federal election and campaign laws, which prohibit tax-exempt ...
Hypocrites: The Tea Party Pork Binge
Post Date: 2011-10-31 13:33:08 by Brian S
House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, the Republican leaderships tether to the Tea Party, flutters the hearts of the government-bashing, budget-slicing faithful with his relentless attacks on runaway federal spending. To Cantor, an $8 billion high-speed rail connecting Las Vegas to Disneyland is wasteful pork-barrel spending. The Virginia Republican set up the You Cut Web site to demonstrate how easy it is to slash government programs. And he made the Department of Housing and Urban Development the poster child for waste when he disclosed that the agency was paying for housing for Ph.D.s. But away from the cameras, Cantor sometimes pulls right up to the ...
Exclusive: 2 Women Accused Cain Of Inappropriate Behavior
Post Date: 2011-10-31 11:13:55 by Brian S
During Herman Cains tenure as the head of the National Restaurant Association in the 1990s, at least two female employees complained to colleagues and senior association officials about inappropriate behavior by Cain, ultimately leaving their jobs at the trade group, multiple sources confirm to POLITICO. The women complained of sexually suggestive behavior by Cain that made them angry and uncomfortable, the sources said, and they signed agreements with the restaurant group that gave them financial payouts to leave the association. The agreements also included language that bars the women from talking about their departures. In a series of comments over the past 10 days, Cain and his ...

Trying to make a point about foreign policy, Cain was loudly interrupted by spectators in the crowd waving Ron Paul signs and yelling, That is absurd. Click to watch video The former Godfathers Pizza executive stopped making his policy point to tell the group to settle down. With all due respect, I'm going to give this speech today, thank you very much, Cain told the crowd. Moments later, Cain was interrupted again while making a point about the Federal Reserve. One of Rep. Ron Pauls signature positions is eliminating that ...
Herman Cain Plans To Cut Campaign Appearances To Avoid Missteps [Full Thread]
Post Date: 2011-10-29 19:03:25 by Brian S
BIRMNGHAM, Ala. (AP) -- Presidential candidate Herman Cain is full of confidence about his 2012 prospects. It's been weeks since he's set foot in first-voting Iowa or New Hampshire, yet he said Saturday he said expects to finish first or second in each state. He's also predicting victory in South Carolina, which will hold the South's first presidential contest in 2012. "And then, look out," Cain said Saturday before plunging into a crowd of football tailgaters at Samford University, a Baptist-affiliated school in Alabama. That win, he says, will set the stage for him to capture the GOP nomination. Cain, however, said he plans to "dial back" his ...

White House Turns The Screws On Congress Over 9 Percent Approval
Post Date: 2011-10-29 18:42:16 by Brian S
A number of White House officials, sensing momentum on their side, blasted Republicans in Congress and on the campaign trail, mocking recent measures and Congress's 9 percent approval rating. Officials believe Obama's tour around the country to promote his jobs bill is paying dividends, but they continue to acknowledge the president has a tough battle ahead as he works to improve the economy and win reelection. "We have a tough economy," one official said. "The sun comes up in the morning, the sky is blue, the grass is green. We've got a tough economy. We're going to have a tough election. That's just the deal." But the official said that the ...
Ron Paul Should Run For President As A Third-Party Candidate
Post Date: 2011-10-29 18:30:49 by Brian S
Whether liberals, conservatives and true populists like it or not (and many do not), the most likely outcome of the nominating process is a general-election battle between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney. This opens up a humongous opening for Dr. Ron Paul to run as a third-party candidate. It has been said of Mitt Romney that he has been a liberal, a moderate and a conservative. What will the next Mitt Romney be? Is there any serious conservative who trusts him? Of course not. If Ron Paul runs for president as a third-party candidate against Obama and Romney, he changes the entire dynamic of the campaign and totally transforms the national debate. Ron Paul would pick up significant new ...
Rick Perry: The Best Little Whore In Texas
Post Date: 2011-10-29 14:00:45 by Brian S
Early morning in a nearly filled corporate ballroom at the Cobb Energy Centre, a second-tier event stadium on the outskirts of Atlanta. It's late September, and a local conservative think tank is hosting a get-together with Rick Perry, whose front-runner comet at the time is still just slightly visible in the bottom of the sky. I've put away five cups of coffee trying to stay awake through a series of monotonous speeches about Georgia highway and port reform, waiting for my chance to lay eyes on the Next Big Thing in person. By the time Perry shows up, I'm jazzed and ready for history. You always want to remember the first time you see the possible next president in person. But ...

Post Date: 2011-10-28 19:24:28 by Brian S
Marines have been flocking to the social networking/aggregator site Reddit to voice their anger at the life-threatening injury inflicted on 24-year-old Iraqi war veteran Scott Olsen by Oakland police during the recent Occupy protests. Video showed Olsen go down after taking a tear gas canister to the head. As fellow protesters tried to assist him, police lobbed a flash grenade into their midstright next to Olsens already fractured skull. The picture above, submitted by Reddit user aburger, has generated well over 1,000 comments on the sitemany from fellow Marines who are absolutely livid at the injury to one of their own by police. Strange Bedfellows: Militias Exercise Their Second Amendment Rights To Protect Occupy Phoenix!
Post Date: 2011-10-28 19:17:04 by Brian S
From Merriam-Webster.com: Irony: Incongruity between the actual result of a sequence of events and the normal or expected result. Once upon a time, Right Wing outfits like Fox News and all of AM radio stoked the fears of conservatives that liberals were going to take over the country and put them all in re-education camps. Militias spread across the country like wildfire, suspicious of a liberal government that, so they were told, was poised to strip away all their rights at gunpoint. It got so bad that wingnuts started showing up at conservative rallies openly carrying their guns in states where it was legal to do so. Of course, the Right Wing ...
Obama Voters, Muslims Need Not Apply For Texas Gun Course
Post Date: 2011-10-28 19:09:39 by Brian S
SAN ANTONIO (Reuters) - A central Texas gun dealer ran radio ads advising "Socialist" liberals, those who voted for President Barack Obama, Arabs and Muslims that they need not apply for his concealed gun license class. Crockett Keller, who owns Keller's Riverside Store, ran the ads on the radio station in his rural hometown of Mason, Texas, which is 120 miles west of the state capital of Austin. "If you are a Socialist liberal and/or voted for the current campaigner in chief, please do not take this class," Keller said in the ad. "You have already proven that you cannot make a knowledgeable and prudent decision as required under the law." "Also, if ...

Poll: 2/3 of Americans Want Wealth Shared More Equally, 70% think GOP Policies Favor the Rich
Post Date: 2011-10-27 17:41:53 by Brian S
There's a lot of interesting data in the latest New York Times/CBS News poll, most of which I consider positive news for the president and the Democrats. The president has a 46% approval rating. Congress has a 9% approval rating. Congress's approval rating has fallen 22% since the Tan Man took over the House of Representatives. The president's approval numbers appear to be relatively stable, but his 46%/46% approve/disapprove rating has slipped from 49%/39% since the January New York Times/CBS News poll.Two-thirds of Americans feel wealth should be shared more equally, and 70% think Republican policies favor the rich.Congressional Republicans are viewed even worse than the ...

Conservative Blogger Gives Out Free Bongs To Embarrass Protesters
Post Date: 2011-10-26 18:57:35 by Brian S
James OKeefe would be proud. A conservative blogger has been accused of trying to give out marijuana bongs and Che Guevara rolling papers in Zuccotti Park in order to make Occupy Wall Street protesters look criminal. New York City resident Joey Boots captured video of Evan Coyne Maloney being confronted by protesters after he allegedly tried to pass out the paraphernalia. At one point, Maloney is seen trying to hand a protester a pack of rolling papers with the image of Che Guevara. Florida Tea Party Convention Agenda Adds Rubio, Pamela Geller, Agenda 21 Talk
Post Date: 2011-10-26 17:37:29 by Brian S
Next weeks Florida Tea Party convention is slated to feature some big names in Florida politics, as well as the opportunity for state tea party members to discuss some of their favorite topics including Agenda 21 and Islam. According to the current convention agenda, speakers will include Gov. Rick Scott, former Christian Coalition director Ralph Reed, anti-Islam blogger Pam Geller and Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla. Attorney General Pat Bondi was mulling over an appearance, but her name does not appear on the updated convention agenda. In September, Scotts office told the Independent his appearance had not been confirmed. The convention will also feature G. Edward Griffin, an ...
The Stunning Victory That Occupy Wall Street Has Already Achieved
Post Date: 2011-10-26 17:30:45 by Brian S
In just one month, the protesters have shifted the national dialogue from a relentless focus on the deficit to a discussion of the real issues facing Main Street. October 26, 2011 Occupy Wall Street has already achieved a stunning victory a victory that is easy to overlook, but impossible to overstate. In just one month, the protesters have shifted the national dialogue from a relentless focus on the deficit to a discussion of the real issues facing Main Street: the lack of jobs -- and especially jobs with decent benefits -- spiraling inequality, cash-strapped American families' debt-loads, and the pernicious influence of money in politics that led us to this ...
Will Marco Rubio's 'Lie' Matter As Much As His Politics?
Post Date: 2011-10-26 14:18:20 by Brian S
Florida Republican and Tea Party favorite Sen. Marco Rubio can add a new line to his political bio: He's now part of a long list of politicians who have been accused of embellishing basic facts about their personal narratives. Like so many members of this infamous fraternity, Rubio has gone on the defensive since a Washington Post report alleged that he embellished crucial details about his parents' emigration from Cuba. In the end, Rubio's embellishments may not matter much to voters, particularly Latinos. Whether the senator is actually the son of exiles who fled Communist Cuba will have little impact on their daily lives. Latino's are more likely to judge him for ...
Distrust of Gov’t Hits New Peak
Post Date: 2011-10-26 14:02:33 by Brian S
Bad news for President Obama and Congress, good news for Occupy Wall Street. A New York Times/CBS poll finds that distrust of government is at its highest level ever, with 89 percent of Americans saying they distrust government to do the right thing, 74 percent saying the country is on the wrong track, and 84 percent saying they disapprove of Congress. The poll also found that 43 percent of Americans say that wealth should be distributed more evenly in America. Asked specifically about the Occupy Wall Street protests, 25 percent of Americans said they had a favorable impression and 20 percent said they had an unfavorable one. Read it at The New York Times

Right-wing figures like Bill Kristol are pushing the idea that Occupy Wall Street is anti-Semitic to scare Jews and embarrass politicians like Obama, but the tactic is not gaining traction. by Michelle Goldberg | October 25, 2011 9:31 PM EDT When your cries of anti-Semitism fail to rile the Anti-Defamation League, you might be on the wrong track. That, however, has not stopped various right-wing figures from pushing the idea that Occupy Wall Street is a hotbed of Jew hatred. Obama Pulls Terror Training Manuals Referencing Islam
Post Date: 2011-10-25 18:36:03 by Brian S
Deputy U.S. Attorney General James Cole confirmed on Wednesday the Obama administration was recalling all training materials used by the law enforcement and national security communities, in order to eliminate all references to Islam. I recently directed all components of the Department of Justice to re-evaluate their training efforts in a range of areas, from community outreach to national security, Cole told a panel at the George Washington University law school. The move comes after complaints from Muslim advocacy organizations, including the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR), which was identified as a Muslim Brotherhood and Hamas front group in the 2004 Holy ...

Struggling Dayton, Ohio, reaches out to immigrants
Post Date: 2011-10-25 13:09:58 by Skip Intro
Dayton, Ohio -- On the same afternoon thousands of Latinos in Alabama took the day off to protest the state's strict new immigration law, Mexican-born Francisco Mejia was ringing up diners' bills and handing containers piled with carnitas to drive-through customers on the east side of Dayton. His family's Taqueria Mixteca is thriving on a street pockmarked with rundown buildings and vacant storefronts. "Business is very good," Mejia said, smiling broadly between orders. It's the kind of success story that leaders in Dayton think offers hope for an entire city. It has adopted a plan not only to encourage immigrants to come and feel welcome here, but also to use ...
