Reason visited the village of Mt. Why the Pentagon Doesn't Know How Much Anything Costs

“You don’t own that plane, the American taxpayers do.” – ‘Stinger’ in Top Gun It is ridiculous, and in many respects it insults the American taxpayer. (From Popular Mechanics) Defense Secretary James Mattis made some frank remarks about the Pentagon’s budget woes last month. “I cannot right now look you in the eye and say that we can tell you that every penny in the past has been spent in a strategically sound manner,” he said during a speech to graduating Air Force cadets in Colorado Springs, CO. “And so this year, for the first time in 70 years, the Pentagon will perform an audit.” It’s about darn time. (We seem to be saying ...

Developer claims politicians blocked their project to favor a crony who helps the politicians An apartment developer paid millions for prime real estate in Edgewater, New Jersey, with a beautiful view of Manhattan. Nearly 2,000 apartments would be built. The developer also offered to build public parks, parking, a ferry terminal, and a pier, all at no cost to taxpayers. But Edgewater's mayor, Michael McPartland, and city council said: No, you may not build! That's not that unusual. Local officials often keep new developments out. But in this case, they also voted to seize the developer's land using eminent domain. John Stossel asks: Why would they do that? The developer says ...

Abused Women to Bill Clinton: 'Go to Hell'

Two women who accused former President Bill Clinton of sexually assaulting them told Fox News host Laura Ingraham on Monday night on “The Ingraham Angle” that they would tell him to “go to hell” if he now attempted to apologize to them personally. Juanita Broaddrick (shown above, right) accused Clinton of raping her in her hotel room in 1978. Kathleen Willey (above, left) claimed that Clinton groped her without her consent in a White House hallway in 1993. Clinton denied the allegations when they surfaced in the late 1990s and worked to discredit them, pointing to alleged discrepancies in the two women’s accounts. But in the era of the #MeToo movement — which ...

Being subpoenaed to appear in front of a judge is something most people want to actively avoid, but a report regarding the Obama-era FBI suggests dozens of agents want to have their day in court to expose government corruption. During Sean Hannity’s Fox News program Friday, the conservative host said he has learned that more than two dozen FBI agents want to be subpoenaed in order to testify about widespread abuses and political bias that occurred at the bureau during the Hillary Clinton email scandal. “We have an (Inspector General) report coming out, and I’m told as many as 28 people that have knowledge of the Clinton email server scandal want to be ...

The latest executive order news coming out of the White House addresses some long overdue questions about government workers and their unions. Efforts to not only shrink the size of government but to remove ineffective or misbehaving workers have largely been stymied by union agreements which were crafted over decades with nobody at the bargaining table looking out for the taxpayer. Other goodies for the labor groups allowed most of their union work to be done on government time and using government resources. These executive orders will be changing some of those processes. (Government Executive) President Trump issued a series of executive orders Friday that could gut federal employee ...

Twenty-one trillion dollars. The Pentagon’s own numbers show that it can’t account for $21 trillion. Yes, I mean trillion with a “T.” And this could change everything. But I’ll get back to that in a moment. There are certain things the human mind is not meant to do. Our complex brains cannot view the world in infrared, cannot spell words backward during orgasm and cannot really grasp numbers over a few thousand. A few thousand, we can feel and conceptualize. We’ve all been in stadiums with several thousand people. We have an idea of what that looks like (and how sticky the floor gets). Advertisement But when we get into the millions, we lose it. It becomes a ...

Kremlin-linked Russian politician Alexander Torshin traveled frequently between Moscow and various destinations in the United States to build relationships with figures on the American right starting as early as 2009, beyond his previously known contacts with the National Rifle Association. Documents newly obtained by NPR show how he traveled throughout the United States to cultivate ties in ways well beyond his formal role as a member of the Russian legislature and later as a top official at the Russian central bank. These are steps a former top CIA official believes Torshin took in order to advance Moscow's long-term objectives in the United States, in part by establishing common ...

Following up on her own previous work that we noted here yesterday, Kim reports: The Department of Justice lost its latest battle with Congress Thursday when it allowed House Intelligence Committee members to view classified documents about a top-secret intelligence source that was part of the FBI’s investigation of the Trump campaign. Even without official confirmation of that source’s name, the news so far holds some stunning implications. Among them is that the Justice Department and Federal Bureau of Investigation outright hid critical information ...

It may be hard to believe, but 32,000 people were put behind bars in Massachusetts because of the testimony of two corrupt officials. Lab technician Sonja Farak was responsible for testing the drugs that were confiscated from suspects who were arrested. While carrying out this important work, she was also stealing some of the drugs for herself and using them on the spot. She would later testify that she stole from other chemists’ samples, eventually stealing drugs that hadn’t been assigned for testing from the safe at the lab and manipulating inventory systems to evade detection. This meant that not only were the samples she tested compromised, but so were those tested ...

BOSTON (AP) -- Former Massachusetts Senate President Stan Rosenberg announced Thursday he would end his long political career after a scathing ethics report concluded he failed to protect the Senate from his husband, who has been charged with sexual misconduct. In a one-sentence letter delivered to the Senate, Rosenberg said his resignation would be effective at 5 p.m. Friday. The decision came amid mounting calls, including several from his Democratic colleagues, for the Amherst Democrat to resign. He stepped down from the presidency in December when allegations first surfaced against his husband, Bryon Hefner. The couple has since separated. In a statement, Rosenberg said he was leaving ...

Slow Death of the Train to Nowhere

Mounting problems may end high-speed-rail projects in California and Texas. A decade ago, high-speed rail was the new, new thing. In 2008, California voters narrowly approved initial bonds for a train that was supposed to go 220 miles an hour and deliver passengers from San Francisco to Los Angeles in two hours and 40 minutes. The next year, the Obama administration’s stimulus bill allocated money for it and several other high-speed lines. But soon the push for trains slowed to a crawl, and now it appears to be on life support. In 2011, the new GOP governors of Florida, Ohio, and Wisconsin turned down federal money for trains. Wisconsin’s Scott Walker told me: “Washington ...

Why is the media ignoring the DNC’s new $84 million campaign finance scandal? While it obsesses over an aging porn star, Russians, discredited ex-FBI officials, and pimple-faced gun-grabbers, the mainstream media has been ignoring an explosive federal lawsuit unearthing a huge illegal money- laundering conspiracy said to have been masterminded last election cycle by the Democratic National Committee and the Hillary Clinton campaign. It is yet another facet of the plot by which Clinton, possibly in league with then-President Obama, broke the law in an attempt to rig the election. Throughout his agonizingly long presidency, Obama serially abused his powers as the nation's Chief ...

Journalist Mike Allen of Axios recently said that one word described Special Counsel Robert Mueller, and that word was “unafraid.” The context for his remarks on Fox News’ “Special Report” was that Mueller had just spun off to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York a bit of his limitless investigation into President Donald J. Trump. Allen’s comment was like so many others from media and pundit types since the special counsel was launched. If there’s one word to describe the media’s relationship to Mueller, it’s “unquestioning.” Pundits and politicians have said, repeatedly, that he is “somebody we ...

BATON ROUGE- An internal investigation is underway after a Baton Rouge Police officer was recorded on body camera video suggesting that, despite not having probable cause to search a vehicle, she would report whatever was found during a search as being found in plain view. The WBRZ Investigative Unit learned of the investigation and obtained the footage Monday. At least two other officers at the scene appeared to be uncomfortable with what the officer was saying and told her they needed "p-c" or probable cause. Probable cause is a standard in criminal law that allows officers to execute a search. Probable cause is not needed if something is in plain view.Video of ...

On the evening of March 20 a full room of Racine County residents assembled to make and hear public statements before the board of the Community Development Authority of Mt. Pleasant, Wisconsin. One item was on the agenda: the board’s first step in the designation of some 3,000 acres of agricultural land, farm houses and scattered, neatly maintained single-family homes as “blighted.” It would be the final step for the local authorities — vital cogs in the Foxconn-booster leadership chain that runs from local Tea Party officials, to Governor Scott Walker, and all the way up to President Donald Trump — to fulfill the promise to Taiwanese tech giant Foxconn to obtain ...

More Drug Lab Misconduct Results In Massachusetts Court Tossing Nearly 12,000 Convictions

from the one-drug-habit;-exponential-damage dept If everything keeps falling apart in Massachusetts, there won't be a drug conviction left in the state. The eventual fallout from the 2012 conviction of drug lab technician Annie Dookhan was the reversal of nearly 21,000 drug convictions. Dookhan was an efficient drug lab worker -- so efficient she often never performed the tests she was required to. The state moved much slower, dragging its feet notifying those possibly affected by Dookhan's lab misconduct until a judge told it to stop screwing around. There still could be more reversed convictions on the way as the state continues to make its way through a 40,000-case backlog. ...

Western Journal – by Becky Loggia A new report published by the Justice Department’s Office of the Inspector General suggests that the Drug Enforcement Administration has seized billions of dollars in cash from people who it has not charged with crimes. The report, released in late March, said that since 2007, the DEA has taken over $4 billion in cash from those suspected of involvement with the drug trade.  However, 81 percent of those seizures were conducted administratively and did not lead to any civil or criminal charges, according to The Washington Post. In total, that meant $3.2 billion was seized from people who were not charged. In many of these thousands ...
