Abraham Lincoln Statue in Chicago Burned and Vandalized Bust of Abraham Lincoln (R) on South Wolcott Avenue in Chicago in a 2015 Google Street View photo and in 2017 photo shared on social media by a Chicago alderman. (Google Maps & Facebook)

The statue of Abraham Lincoln was recently set on fire and vandalized in Chicago, according to an alderman who posted the picture of the charred bust on Facebook.

“What an absolute disgraceful act of vandalism,” wrote Alderman Ray Lopez.

“This bust of Abraham Lincoln, erected by Phil Bloomquist on August 31, 1926, was damaged and burned,” he added.

The statue is located at the corner of West 69th Street and South Wolcott Avenue. Google Street View images from 2015 shot the statue resting on the corner. (Google Maps)Statue of Abraham Lincoln on South Wolcott Avenue in Chicago in 2015. (Google Maps)

Lopez is asking anyone with information about the act of vandalism to contact police or his office immediately.

“If anyone has any information regarding this act, please contact the police or my office immediately, he said.”

Lincoln, a Republican, was the 16th president of the United States. He led the country through the Civil War and abolished slavery.

On Wednesday someone used red spray paint to vandalize the Lincoln National Monument in Washington. The vandal wrote “[expletive] law” on the column at the top of the steps that lead up to the statue of seated Lincoln. The graffiti was found at 4:30 a.m. on Tuesday, NBC reported. Preservation crews were working to remove the paint, using a “mild, gel-type architectural paint stripper” to take off the paint safely.

On Monday, vandals toppled a Confederate statue in Durham, North Carolina. Police arrested a member of the communist Workers World Party and two other suspects in connection to the incident.

Late on Saturday night, a Confederate statue was vandalized with orange paint in Kentucky. City workers started cleaning the statue dedicated to Confederate soldier John B. Castleman on Monday. The Kentucky and North Carolina incidents were triggered by violence in Charlottesville, Virginia, on Saturday. People protesting the removal of a Confederate statue there, including extremist white supremacists, clashed with armed and violent members of the Antifa extremist group.

Deputies arrested a 22-year-old member of the far-left communist Workers World Party on Tuesday, Aug. 15, and charged her with vandalism for toppling a Confederate statue in Durham on Monday, Fox News reported.

Takiya Fatima Thompson was seen bringing a ladder up to the Confederate Soldiers Monument in front of old courthouse as a crowd of rioters cheered. She then tied a rope around the nearly century-old statue to help topple it.

Several rioters then proceeded to kick and stomp the downed bronze statue, which depicts a soldier with a rifle. The work was commissioned in 1929. Thompson, a college student, now faces charges for vandalism, property damage, and rioting, according to the Durham County Sheriff’s Office.

Durham County Sheriff Mike Andrews said that he has identified several others involved in the vandalism and his deputies are now looking for the suspects to press criminal charges.

“Let me be clear, no one is getting away with what happened. We will find the people responsible,” Andrews said on Tuesday afternoon.

“We can all agree yesterday went too far. Yesterday was not the Durham that I know.”

North Carolina’s Democratic governor likewise condemned the vandalism.

“The racism and deadly violence in Charlottesville is unacceptable but there is a better way to remove these monuments,” Gov. Roy Copper wrote on Twitter. The toppling of the statue in Durham on Monday was triggered by events in Charlottesville on Friday and Saturday. Members of various groups, including white nationalists, and neo-Nazis, gathered to protest the removal of a Confederate statue there. They were met with counterprotesters, some of whom were armed and violent members of the extremist Antifa organization. Clashes started on Friday and continued on Saturday, culminating in a car attack that killed one counterprotester and injured 19 others.

The communist Workers World Party, which Thompson is a member of, was founded in 1959. One of the organizational goals of the communists in America is to “discredit American culture by degrading all form of artistic expression,” according remark read into the Congressional Record, based on a book exposing the communist agenda in the United States.

One communist cell was told explicitly to “eliminate all good sculpture from parks and buildings,” replacing it with meaningless and shapeless forms.

As Bannon says, bring it on. He can't get enough of this stuff.

Not exactly a major monument either. This seems more clickbaity than anything else. It's a statue of Lincoln the size of lawn ornament on some (apparently) untraveled side street.

Yeah, clickbait for sure.

Not exactly a major monument either.

Looks like it fell off a truck and they decided it looked good where it landed.

But the level of ignorance of the perp is amazing. First, Lincoln freed the slaves. Second, rock doesn't burn. Third, now all the people in the 'hood will think Lincoln was black.

Oooooh. That can work. Then they can have a play called "Lincoln" and cast a black actor.

Second, rock doesn't burn.

But the heat seems to have damaged the lower left corner where there appears to be a chunk missing. There are also fragments on the ledge.

Unless that bust is 2,000 years old, it appears as though vandals have been "tuning up" old Abe's face over the years.

I don't think it was the heat.

First, Lincoln freed the slaves.

Let's not kid ourselves about the Emancipation Proclamation.

He "freed" the slaves in the South where he had no authority.

He left the Northern slaves in bondage to their owners.

It was a very cynical move, intended to drain Confederate reserves by making them paranoid about a slave revolt and forcing them to maintain minimal garrisons across the South.

I don't think it was the heat.

If the fire dept showed up and put cold water on a hot statue, that would do it.

There's no situation, that gov "help" can't make worse. They were probably in a rush to get back to the firehouse, and watch The Apprentice reruns. or WWE.

Grant's tomb is in NYC where people have regularly used it as a public urinal.

GRANT'S TOMB -- (BY BRUCE FRANKEL)
(Extension of Remarks - May 18, 1994)
[Page: E952]

HON. HENRY J. HYDE
in the House of Representatives TUESDAY, MAY 17, 1994

• Mr. HYDE. Mr. Speaker, Grant's Tomb , once New York's most popular visitor attraction, has become one of its most tarnished. The sad plight of this important historical figure is more particularly set forth in the accompanying article.

• Illinois State Senator Judy Baar Topinka has taken up the cause of moving Grant's Tomb to Illinois, where he once lived in Galena, and where his last resting place will be treated with more respect. She authored an Illinois Senate joint resolution.

• This material has been forwarded to the Honorable Rudolph Giuliani, mayor of the city of New York, on behalf of Senator Topinka.

[FROM USA TODAY, APR. 1, 1994] (BY BRUCE FRANKEL)

New York: The correct question soon may change from `Who's buried in Grant's Tomb ?' to `How much longer will Ulysses S. Grant and his wife, Julia, be buried there?'

[...]

The tomb once attracted more visitors than the Statue of Liberty. But crime-wary tourists are afraid to visit the 122nd Street monument, near Columbia University and on the edge of Harlem.

Homeless people sleep on its littered portico and urinate in its corners. Drug addicts loiter in the shadows, leaving crack vials behind.

• Graffiti is regularly scrawled on the sepulcher's walls. The roof leaks. Photographs and Grant's Civil War battle flags are missing.

• Grant's Tomb has become the most desecrated presidential burial site in the nation,' says Frank Scaturro, a Columbia University history major.

• Scaturro, a former volunteer park service guide at the tomb , has been trumpeting alarm across the nation in a 325-page report.

`It's a presidential tomb , and it's being treated as a subway station,' says Ulysses Grant Dietz, Grant's great-great-grandson.

[snip]

Bruce Frankel needs a correction. Old timers may recall Groucho Marx asking, on You Bet Your Life, who's buried in Grant's tomb? The correct answer is nobody. The remains of Grant and his wife are there, but entombed people are not buried.
