Polls will shortly close in Alabama as part of a special election that pits Democrat Doug Jones against Roy Moore, a Republican candidate dogged by sexual misconduct allegations.

The race is neck-and-neck despite the state's strong conservative leanings, with Mr Moore denying the claims of eight women who say he harassed them - including one allegation involving a child aged 14.

Polls close at 7pm local time/8pm ET/1am GMT, with results expected to start coming in soon afterwards.

And speaking at a rally on the eve of the election last night, Mr Moore told supporters: "If you don't believe in my character, don't vote for me." Many of his followers simply don't believe the abuse allegations or say they have been blown out of proportion, and he retains the support of the Republican party and the President, Donald Trump.

Alabama's Secretary of State John Merrill said preliminary estimates show a higher voter turnout for this special election.

Earlier, Merrill had predicted a 25 per cent voter turnout. He said he still felt "comfortable" with that number, but it could maybe be higher.

"We think that that's going to end up being the number. It could be a little bit higher. We've seen some numbers that have been a little bit higher in certain aspects of voting throughout the state, than in other areas. But some areas have underperformed," Mr Merrill said.

He added that "a lot" of the absentee ballots have already been recorded, and there were more absentee votes than usual.

According to the CNN exit poll data, 49 per cent of voters said they believed the allegations against Roy Moore were definitely, or probably true, but 55 per cent said it was not an important factor in deciding their vote.

Mr Moore has denied the allegations.

Randall Woodfin, the newly elected mayor of Birmingham, Alabama and a first-term Democrat, told CNN's Wolf Blitzer that Roy Moore was a "threat to integrity and decency, not just for Alabama but for our country."

There are reports of high turnout in both rural areas and major cities - both campaigns seem to be confident mood about what that means for their chances. Mr Moore has a strong rural support base, while Mr Jones does better in cities.

But at his own rally on Monday night Mr Jones said the election was a referendum on "who we are and what we're going to tell our daughters". He was joined by basketball star Charles Barkley, who said it was "amazing" Mr Moore was still in the race and the state risked "looking like idiots to the nation".

Mr Jones, for his own part, has been attacked as a liberal who would not properly represent a state that hasn't elected a Democrat senator for 30 years.

Mr Jones acknowledged in Montgomery: "Look, I'm not going to be the senator that everybody in the state can agree with 100 per cent of the time." But he added: "They'll know I'm somebody that will sit down with them. I will learn from them. ... I will try to be the public servant I think a US senator ought to be."

Tuesday's vote is being held to find a replacement for Jeff Sessions, who was selected as Attorney General by President Donald Trump.

Doug Jones has told supporters that his campaign is a chance to be on the “right side of history for the state of Alabama.”

“Judge Moore has been consistently wrong about the Constitution,” Mr Jones said to reporters after casting his ballot at a Baptist church in Birmingham. “I don't think Roy Moore is going to win this election.”

If Mr Jones wins on Tuesday, Republicans would control the Senate by a slim 51-49 margin, giving Democrats momentum ahead of the November 2018 congressional elections, when control of both chambers of Congress will be at stake.

The kiss of death was the false claim against Moore, for the purpose of causing him to lose the election. A new tactic the snowflakes are doing.

A new tactic the snowflakes are doing.

It's not new at all. Trump used the same despicable tactic against Ted Cruz using a National Enquirer story (Fake News) that Rafael killed JFK.

Standard libtard mudslinging.

Candidates endorsed by Trump need to give him the finger early, and often!

" The kiss of death was the false claim against Moore, for the purpose of causing him to lose the election. "

Exactly. Those false allegations destroyed him !!

And the allegations were 40 years old, brought up just a few weeks before the election. How convenient. And the GOPe did not help. Shelby showed his true colors

What if he was innocent ? We will never know.

So, the people of Alabama voted in a Demorat that is pro illegal immigrant, pro abortion, anti second amendment, and will be a toady for the DC establishment ?

I think the people of Alabama will come to regret their choice .

The correct way to look at ANY of these claims, is that the political figure running for office IS INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY... and if he/she should win and proven guilty after, they need to step down. THAT should have been Trumps position on Moore, when asked weeks ago who he supports.

The kiss of death was the false claim against Moore, for the purpose of causing him to lose the election. A new tactic the snowflakes are doing.

Exactly.

The "tactics" of Smear Merchants of the MSM and Establishment Republicans even went as far as supporting the libelous notion that Roy Moore was a "Pedophile." Does it get worse than that? 16 year old = "Child"? At that -- 40 years ago?

Some of us may have been 18-20, dating a 16-17 year old. Is THAT "pedophilia"?

That this tactic is even allowed means the end to any honest journalism, any honest politics, and the start of 40 year old SELECT witch hunts.

Deckard and hondo68 aren't interested so much in "truth"; This issue proves they are plainly and clearly nothing subversives.

Yup.

Call it a "Witch Hunt," "A Political Hit,", a Lynching, a Political Smear Campaign.

The allegation: 40 YEARS ago Roy Moore may have asked a teenager out on a date. NOT "children" as the libelers have claimed. Roy Moore wasn't close to being a "pedophile."

Roy Moore did NOT raped or molested or harassed them 40 years ago. That yearbook signature of Moore's was tainted by forgery by the main slanderer. THAT itself is a crime. Gloria Allred herself encouraged this crime.

What ALL of the Dems and "Never-Trumper" Globalists are ignoring is that precedence is now set to use that SAME "book" that turns back the clock 40 years ago. IF need be, it can be unleashed ON THEM. For trivial matters like this OR for ACTUAL crimes.

What we witnessed was horrific lying, backed by blatant manipulation and libel by everything the MSM, Hollywood, liberal Sports personalities AND the Establishment GOP and Democrats could throw at ONE man: Roy Moore...

WHY did they fear this one man? he was just one guy running for Senator. ONE GUY.

Because as we all recall, Moore was "The 10 Commandments Guy, " a guy whose standard of law, of the Constitution, of was Bible based -- who would battle the tyranny of the Uni-Party Hypocrites and Liars, expose them and back them up to the Gates of Hell...And then start a conservative, MAGA tsunami. It may still happen after America witnessed this disgrace.

Decency Lost. Fairness Lost. America Lost. This is about to get uglier. The Uni-Party's obvious goal: To un-seat President Trump.

The Homofascists won. Moral Relativists won. The corrupt Uni-Party won. The God-less Globalist NWO won.

Slander and libel is now legal. As is rape and murder. (BUT ONLY IF YOU'RE A DEMOCRAT OR MITCH McCONNELL Republicans and Globalists.)

Stoner, consider these the first shots fired in CW2.

There WILL be retaliation. Patriots, good people in the Alphabet Agencies and Trump and MAGA allies will data dump on certain Media and politicians. It's coming....

Strange came to Washington and promptly earned the Establishment’s favor - so much so that the pro-Establishment Senate Leadership Fund has launched an $8 million campaign on Strange’s behalf in the special election.

Judging by what’s been broadcast on Alabama television, most of that money, it seems, has been targeted at the one man the Establishment least wants representing Alabama in the Senate - Congressman Mo Brooks, the first Republican to win Alabama’s fifth congressional district since 1868.

Brooks proved in his first congressional race that he is nobody’s lackey. He bucked the party leadership in Washington when he challenged a sitting Democrat-turned-Republican, Parker Griffith, and soundly defeated him in the primary; then, in the general election, he took on former Senator Howell Heflin’s long-time chief of staff, Steve Raby, and dispatched him easily.

Since then, Brooks has been the kind of leader for which conservative activists hunger.

He is a member of the House Freedom Caucus, and has been a leader on key issues of concern to conservative grassroots activists - toughening enforcement of our nation’s immigration laws, working to repeal ObamaCare, fighting to reduce our nation’s out-of-control debt.

Since he announced his intention to run for the seat, he’s been on the receiving end of millions of dollars worth of negative ads, most of which assert falsely that he is an opponent of President Trump.

In fact, he is a strong supporter of President Trump’s agenda - according to one recent analysis, he’s voted in support of the Trump agenda 95 percent of the time.

Brooks has been fighting in the House for funding for President Trump’s proposed border wall, and he has promised that when he gets to the Senate, he’ll filibuster if need be to ensure that Congress appropriates funds for that wall.

It’s no wonder that last week, seven Trump delegates to the 2016 Republican National Convention - including State Rep. Ed Henry, the chairman of the Trump campaign in Alabama - endorsed Brooks for the Senate.

Conservative talk radio hosts Mark Levin, Sean Hannity, and Laura Ingraham have also endorsed Brooks for the seat. So have FreedomWorks and Senate Conservatives Fund.

Last week, Tea Party Patriots Citizens Fund - the Super PAC affiliated with Tea Party Patriots - endorsed Brooks, and launched an Independent Expenditure on his behalf.

And this week, I’ll be traveling to Alabama to spend time on the campaign trail with Brooks.

As with every endorsement issued by our Super PAC, it was based in large part on Brooks‘ strength with our grassroots supporters in Alabama. Even though there are nine candidates running for the GOP nomination, Brooks easily garnered more than a majority of the vote when we surveyed our supporters in the state. That’s a testament to his reputation among conservatives throughout the state, and it’s a sign he’ll have the kind of support he needs to serve with spine in the Senate.

The even better news is, Alabama’s special election gives conservative grassroots activists all over the country an opportunity to engage. Because there are no other Senate elections going on next Tuesday, activists around the country can focus their energy making volunteer calls to targeted voters in Alabama - a project TPPCF is directing as the election nears.

So if you’re a conservative activist fed up with the Senate’s inability to pass a real ObamaCare repeal bill - the kind we’ve been promised for seven years now - and you’re a strong supporter of President Trump who wants to send a message to Washington, join us as we work to elect Mo Brooks to the Senate.

Well, we have been promised that for a long, long time ! And I am sick of hearing 3D Chess BS ! The results have been just like " Lock Her Up " !

It is time for them to PUT UP, or STFU !!!

I will LMAO if & when allegations come out against McTurtle, Eddie Ryan Munster, etc etc that destroy their careers.

I hear ya. Strongly. Passionately. But retaliated with the same High Tech weaponry the Left uses: NSA intel. The Left already controls the message through the Leftist MSM, so we'll have to use the Alternative Media and folks like Limbaugh, Hannity, Breitbart, and a bunch of little guys.

I am hoping for what Patrick Henry called for:

“Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their party [conservatives and patriots]"...

Here, Joseph Loconte for the Centennial Institute’s February issue of their Centennial Review speaks for tens of millions of us:

The new conventional wisdom is that the greatest threat to American democracy is the person who believes that there are universal, transcendent truths, that these truths are embedded in human nature, and that they are meant to govern human life and human societies. The people who hold such views, people of faith, are now called extremists. The proper moral posture, we are told, is that of the moderate…

Moderates reject the concept of a moral God who governs the universe, because an attachment to ultimate beliefs about right and wrong breeds fanaticism. These “abstract ideas”—such as the ancient belief in a God who defends the widow and the orphan and the unborn—have no place in the mental outlook of the moderate.

This moderate of liberal imagination is quite a specimen. Evidently, there is nothing—absolutely nothing—occurring in the cozy, cushioned, shrimp-and-chardonnay world of the Manhattan moderate that summons his moral imagination, nothing that offends his conscience or provokes his outrage. Nothing except those people who make moral judgments.

Contrary to liberal delusions, no leap forward toward a more just and virtuous society was ever brought about by people lacking moral and religious convictions. Moderates and moral agnostics don’t move the world. They never have and they never will.

If we hope to bear witness to the truths of the gospel in our generation, for the sake of our neighbors and our nation, then we must choose sides in this battle for hearts and minds. Moderation and neutrality are not options, for both involve a retreat from responsibility. Both would allow the dark forces of this world to gain ground.

What will it be for us, ladies and gentlemen? Should we follow the Nazarene, or should we become “moderate” and “reasonable” people as the world defines these terms for us?

BRAVO, Mr. LOCONTE!

I am sure the demonturds engineered the false allegations against Moore, but I highly suspect the GOPe contributed to the effort, as well as the media !!

In the end, I think the supposedly " conservative " Alabama voters will come to regret voting for Pro Illegal Alien; pro gay; pro abortion; anti 2nd amendment; pro DC establishment, pro Hillary; demonrat Jones.

Well, your suspicions are indeed FACT; McConnell and his GOPe colluded with the Democrats to oust Moore. But in doing so they have fully exposed themselves are "The Uni-Party."

The perverted, ill-virtued, moral relativist tyranny you just described is America's future should the Democrats and Establishment GOP (led by McConnell and Ryan and the "Never Trumper" NWO stooges) want. WHILE ignoring all of the High Crimes committed against the US by the Clintons, 0bamas, BUSHES, and their respective cabals.

The vote AGAINST Moore was a vote for national suicide and vote for a tyrannical, God-less, anti-Christian NWO (seen on display in Europe.)

Get outta here. You're a craven coward and embarrassment.

You stand on quicksand. No principles. You just straddle the fence. Good luck with your moral relativism. I suppose when whomever comes to your house, you will change your coat. Practice makes perfect, Turncoat.

You make Yukon seem like Patrick Henry.
