Title: Comey, the memos and the question of what’s classified

The first clue that the question of classification is complicated regarding memos written by then-FBI Director James B. Comey comes in the first paragraph of the first document. Comey wrote the memos to memorialize his conversations with president-elect and then President Trump, beginning with a meeting at Trump Tower on Jan. 6, 2017, and continuing to April 11 — less than a month before Trump fired Comey.

The release of the memos also reignited a question that has floated around since their existence was revealed in June: Do they contain classified material, and is classified material in the memo or memos Comey leaked to Richman?

That is why that first paragraph in the first Jan. 7 memo is so important.

There were seven memos in total. Four included classified information. Two were classified as “confidential,” the lowest level of classification. Two were classified as secret.

Let’s summarize. Comey is alleged to have shared four memos with Richman:

An unclassified memo that he gave Richman in May with instructions to share it with the Times. This was the only identified deliberate leak to the media.

Another unclassified memo dated either March 1 or March 30 that, like the three other memos, he shared at an unknown time.

A redacted memo that, if unredacted, would have been classified. A memo that is now classified but that apparently was not classified at the time Comey shared it. (“Apparently” because it’s not clear when he shared it or when it was reclassified.)

The Journal reports that the Justice Department is reviewing the situation. It seems unlikely, based on what we know now, that the department’s inspector general will side with Trump’s portrayal of what happened.

Golden Shower Boy:

James Comey illegally leaked classified documents to the press in order to generate a Special Council? Therefore, the Special Council was established based on an illegal act? Really, does everybody know what that means?

Yes, Donnie, you're a dip-shit, and you love, more than anything else in the world, pointing this fact out to the world.

So you admit leaking documents to the press illegally? No wonder Trump fired your sorry worthless ass!

You had Clintons dead to rights so many times but never pulled the trigger and you waste all your time on nonsense of Trump Russian ties which have not been proven at all in any way while ignoring Clinton and Obama's ties to every enemy of USA! What a country of nitwits!

What is your fascination with Clinton's fucked up shower scene? Does this get you off?

Comey and Mueller both are worthless shit that should be in jail. They should be in jail along side Clinton's. Now that's real justice!!!

So you admit leaking documents to the press illegally?

The Justice department will rule on this, of course, but do you really believe that a career FBI veteran would actually hand over classified documents to an attorney, who also has a very intimate understanding of what constitutes "classified information" to be published?

Mr. Comey knew exactly what he was doing, and did so legally.

Comey and Mueller both are both far smarter, better educated and are FAR BETTER Americans than you.

Extremely improbable.

Here is an analysis from Politifact:

If Comey's actions are ruled to be LEGAL.....

I am 100% certain that the true-orange followers will be having a complete melt-down claiming the corrupt-conspiracy at the justice department is in the tank for Comey....

leaking documents to the press illegally? No wonder

One thing puzzles me. Maybe you can explain?

I used to think that classified status is primarily intended to hide information from the foreign powers.

Now it seems, that it serves to hide information from the public even if all foreign powers know it.

What will you say?

The purpose has always been to hide the information from all enemies, foreign and domestic.

Domestic enemies inevitably includes political enemies who will thwart the ability of actors to follow their agenda.

If Comey's actions are ruled to be LEGAL.....

All of the people who judge anything in America are themselves political partisans, holding that power to judge because of their political loyalty. That's why they were appointed.

We're in a three-sided political war right now. The Democrats are united and one side. The Republicans are (foolishly) divided and on two sides.

The Democrats understand that the Trump side of the Republican factions is where the possibility of change they hate lies, so they are directing their fire at him.

The Republicans are struggling over their sense of "propriety" and loyalty to their version of the Kennedys (the Bushes).

Yeah,it seems that way to me,too.

Then again, the foreign powers already know you are dropping bombs on their heads,so it would be pretty hard to keep it a secret to them.

In the entire history of the world, the only nations that had to build walls to keep their own citizens from leaving were those with leftist governments.

Hide the info from the public and from Congress, yes.

Chomsky wrote about this at some length back in the Eighties and he was hardly the first to notice. He thought it was an essential component in our federal subsidized waste programs. You know, all that stuff about a federal system of "public subsidy, private profit" he was always on about.

In many ways, our pols don't care much about non-Americans knowing the bulk of "classified" material simply because their citizens can't vote in our elections. America's government is hardly alone in treating its own citizens as its primary opponents. Only the top grade of classified material (the kind stored and accessed via SCF facilities) is actually secret; the regular Confidential and Secret categories of info are the ones they are determined to keep Congress and the American voters from learning about.

I haven't read it, so it's tough to comment. Maybe I'll get it.

If you have read it, tell me this: does he frankly acknowledge that institutionalized black slavery of America and the British Empire were the capitalist system run amok along VERY tribal lines?

This is the problem with all of the "Golden Age" lookbacks: slavery, segregation, the accumulation of wealth from the armed exploitation and subjugation of others. Yes, the QUICKEST way to get rich is to plunder and enslave other people. But it's evil.

An analysis isn't honest if it does not acknowledge the evil, and the DEGREE to which the evil contributed to the success of the culture that employed it. For let's be clear, the REASON that the American Revolution was led by Virginians was that Virginians and other Southerners were much richer than Northern farmers and fishermen BECAUSE OF the huge economic advantage, in terms of the (immoral) concentration of great wealth through the exploitation of slave labor. Northern farms could never compete with that even if they had better weather.

So, the ruling aristocracy who provided the leadership of the struggle were aristocracy in the first place BECAUSE OF the wholesale annihilation of the human liberty of a quarter of the population. The planters were rich BECAUSE OF slavery, and they were the leaders BECAUSE they were rich. There were talented people everywhere, but the wealth of the Southern planters made them stand out in a culture that honored, and still honors, wealth as success.

But their wealth and success were BASED ON the brutal tribal (English white) exploitation of other tribes (African, black).

THAT American democracy was what came out of the Revolution, and it proved incapable of fixing itself. It took an unconstitutional civil war and nearly a million dead to fix THAT.

So, I don't know if Goldberg is going to go back to the Founding, and all of that, when things were easy because the ruling class was all one tribe and one religion with one economic belief system - that included reducing labor costs to near zero through slavery - but if that's the golden age to which he hearkens, then his analysis is fatally flawed from the start.

If he hails back to a post-civil war era, the problem is that, while there was growth, certainly, tribal oppression remained the law of the land until only about 50 years ago. And it was formally ended by LBJ, somebody I'm sure Jonah Goldberg doesn't like very much.

I'm willing to read the book and consider the arguments, but just once it would be nice to hear somebody address the things that concern ME about all of this nostalgia for the past. One cannot simply gloss over slavery - which caused a Civil War - or segregation, whose aftermath is the REASON we have blacks voting nearly all Democrat.

The modern tribal politics are the result of the breakdown of an old tribal politics - of segregation by the dominant class. It is not something new under the sun.
